Planting and care

Set this bugbane in rich, well-drained soil, well improved with organic matter, in part shade or shade. It prefers a spot protected from strong afternoon sun. Space plants 60 to 90 cm apart to let the air circulate.

Keep the soil cool for the first two years after planting. A 5 to 8 cm layer of mulch helps hold in moisture and regulate soil temperature. Once established, the plant tolerates changes in moisture well. No pruning is needed; simply clean up the spent flower spikes in late fall, or leave the black fruit for winter interest.
