Planting and care

Plant in fall or spring in well-drained, fertile, slightly acidic soil. Choose a spot in full sun to get the best fall colour. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, without over-amending, to encourage deep rooting.

Water regularly the first year after planting to build strong roots. After that, the 'Armstrong' red maple tolerates changes in moisture well, but prefers soil that doesn't dry out completely. Avoid planting in spots that are too dry or overly wet. No special pruning is needed apart from cleaning out dead branches.
