Planting and care

Plant in rich, cool, well-drained soil. Choose a spot in full sun for the best fall colour. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and enrich it with organic matter. Allow spacing of at least 4 to 6 m, depending on the space available.

Water regularly the first year to make sure the roots establish. Keep the soil moderately moist during the growing season, then reduce once rooted. Spread mulch around the trunk to hold in moisture. Little care is needed once established; a light pruning can be done in late winter to keep the columnar shape.
