Planting and care

Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Choose a part-shade spot, sheltered from drying winds and from harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage. Allow 3 to 4 m of spacing so the crown can develop fully.

Water regularly during the first year of establishment, especially in dry spells, to keep the soil slightly moist without waterlogging. The plant adapts well to woodland soil; avoid spots that are too hot and drying. A layer of organic mulch helps hold in moisture and moderate soil temperature. No regular pruning is needed; a light cleanup of dead branches is enough.
